Too often pupils arrive in secondary school with very little being known about their history as readers. This passport aims to tackle this. They can be given out at primary induction days and the first few pages can be completed then, capturing invaluable information about early reading experiences, favourite books and books read during Year 6. The pupils can then be encouraged to complete the middle pages during the summer vacation and this will help to keep them reading, addressing the dip in performance that is often linked with transition. Then when they arrive in secondary school, class teachers can guide the pupils through the completion of the secondary pages, engaging them with the ways in which the new school encourages reading for pleasure. This will give English teachers a huge amount of vital information about reading interest and ability and also about writing skills while also strengthening transition procedures.
